On January 13, Staff Sgt. Michael A. Mendoza received the Navy Cross, the second highest award for valor, for his actions in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In April 2004, Mendoza led five of his Marines in a charge across an open field and up a 10-foot berm, killing 10 insurgents and forcing others to retreat. He protected wounded Marines and killed an insurgent who wounded his commander, before evacuating his commander to safety.
Mendoza is just the 18th Marine to be awarded the Navy Cross during the Global War on Terror.
