Pack the bags... we're hittin' the road •
My first memories of travel as a kid are playing crazy 8's in an old lime green RV with my dad. A few transmissions later we graduated to a series of Dodge Caravans to make the 40 hour drive to the mountains out west during the winter and summer breaks. It was during these early adventures with my family that I learned what it meant to be rich in experience -- by the time I could drive myself we had visited 49 states. •
Of course once I got my license the call of the open road continued... which means I've always had cars I could camp in. •
The first was a Nissan pickup with a topper and bed in the back that an ex-girlfriend T-boned. Next was a Volvo Station wagon that had to be towed into Yosemite Valley after the transmission blew up in Nevada. After that a Toyota Sunraider mini RV that never had a first gear, and last was the elusive VW Rialta that broke down numerous times, but none more memorable than that night outside of Truth or Consequence, NM (cue the irony). •
Great road trip vehicles have character and they become a part of the family... and as such they often take a long time to find. So that's why I'm stoked that after much searching and eBay bidding -- I've got a new road trip 'vehicle'. I'm calling her 'Bonnie' she's a mid 2000 Airstream (the tow vehicle is 'Clyde') and I can't wait to hit the road -- should be a fun ride. •
