Can you make fine wine with less water? Will good grapes still grow in California in 20 years? What will become of an industry central to the state’s identity? Those are the kinds of questions that #climatechange is forcing winemakers like the Jacksons, owners of Jackson Family Wines, to confront. The company is one of the largest family-owned winemakers in the United States. After decades in the business, the Jacksons are sensitive to slight variations in the weather, and they are convinced of one thing: It is getting hotter and drier, and that could be a problem. So far the drought has not wreaked havoc on the California wine business. But the challenges are hardly theoretical. Grapes are a surprisingly resilient crop, but they're ripening earlier. Nights are warmer. Aquifers are running dry. As a result, the region’s wine country has become a laboratory for the reshaping of agriculture nationwide. @jasonhenry captured this #aerial view of vineyards in California’s Mendocino County. Visit the link in our profile to read more about some of the measures the Jacksons are taking to adapt to hotter, drier conditions.
