Everytime I attempt to post the weekly #SoulTrain clip I get distracted. 77 was a transitional bridge of a year for music: Disco was in full swing & other subcultures were developing too (punk, hip hop, new wave) #SoulTrain had an awesome 5 year run as an Afrocentric cultural education show. 77 came & it was a #GetDownOrLayDown dilemma: do we grow w the rest of America or get left behind? It flawlessly navigated itself through the disco era w ease although I wasn't too fond of the new set design (always loved the iconic logo BiG BoLd Proud dead center of the studio. Now replaced w a small crystal ball and smaller fonts. #SleepyBrown's pop Jimmy was the voice of #Atl's #Brick (similar to Sleep's falsetto in the #Outkast songs he produced & sang on) their brand of disco & jazz gave them their first hit w the aptly titled #Dazz. This go round was for their sophomore self titled Lp w the hit #AintGonnaHurtNobody.
Philly's own #SisterSledge were on their way w 77's Together but not quite ready for prime time that their third effort (79's #WeAreFamily) would take them. But younger sis #KathySledge still demonstrates a soulful mastery way beyond her 17 years. This ep aired 40 years ago Dec 24th 1977.
