I remember hearing about STEP UP 3 auditions in New York, while I was living in Indiana. I got a hold of my friend Cedric, we made a plan to stay with a friend , and go audition for the movie .
I was in School at the time, working three jobs, and I still remember not having very much money to get around in New York City… Long story short, the audition came I saw a bunch of amazing dancers, but I also brought that fire and got my fair share of OOOOS and AAAHS .
But I remember the reactions of certain people just walking in the room , before they even danced it was like they booked the job....coincidentally when I saw the movie a year later , they were ALL in the movie.
And I remember thinking to myself I want to have that reaction when I walk into a room one day . I want to make my presence felt just from my energy , history of killing the game, and skill .
I didn't get the job obviously ?... but I did not hold a grudge . This happened to me at even more auditions once I went to LA ... I was looked over no name , no previous work history. But I still cheered for those people that got jobs over me, I still admired them, I still watched them and tried to learn as much as I could from how different they all were. And pushed myself after the let downs ... Now as I sit here in China ,
Choreographing the 6th installment of STEP UP , with my partner Janelle Ginestra ...
I am proud of myself for never putting negative energy out there , just because I didn't get something at the time. Truly , it always comes around when you work your ass off and believe in the special something that you have to offer .
