When a city has been waiting for a needed new subway line since 1929, public art is probably far down the list of expectations. But soon, when New Yorkers visit the new Second Avenue subway’s 4 stations, they’ll find one of the most ambitious contemporary art projects in tile work that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has ever undertaken. Lately, with the opening of the superstation at Fulton Street downtown and the extension of the No. 7 line, the art thinkers of @mtaartsdesign have been able to participate almost from the beginning in incorporating installations by leading artists into stations’ designs. The photographer @george_etheredge took this photo at the 86th Street station, where 12 large-scale mosaic portraits by #ChuckClose — like this one showing the artist Sienna Shields — are on display. Want a sneak peek? Visit the link in our profile to be among the first to take a tour of the artwork of the Second Avenue subway, created by 4 artists.
