In the city of Dothan, Alabama, District Attorney Douglas A. Valeska’s grip on the criminal justice system has exacted a steep price for many. Valeska often uses diversion, an alternative to court that spares first-time or low-risk defendants the harsh consequences of a criminal record. It also gives prosecutors more time to go after dangerous offenders. But a @ニューヨーク・タイムズ investigation found that in Dothan, diversion seems available only to those with money and, in some cases, favor. The district attorney's circuit is relatively poor and rural, but his diversion fees — typically $750 for a misdemeanor and $1,400 for a felony — are among the highest in the country. And in his jurisdiction, where the poverty rate for blacks is almost triple that of whites, blacks are at a significant disadvantage. @misterwidmer photographed children playing in a courtyard at a housing project while on #nytassignment in Dothan, Alabama.
