Dec 5th 1987 the 554th episode of #SoulTrain television's longest running syndicated music program from 1971-2004. #wGuestStars #TheJets (promoting their 2nd studio album Magic---kinda miffed they opted to NOT promote the awesome #BobbyNunn penned #Rocket2U & instead went w #CrossMyBrokenHeart & #IDoYou) the late great #Kashif (we lost him earlier this year---promoting a 1978 cover of #MothersFinest's "Love Changes" w #MelisaMorgan) & #PublicEnemy (their debut #YoBumRushTheShow made waves---but the b side of their last single would singlehandedly change the world---not since #BadBrains arrival on the scene has a black group managed to effectively channel the rage & the barometer of the nation in a song. Whilst keeping it "hip hop" all the while. I think this was their national tv debut & #DonCornelius nailed it with his statement to @mrchuckd_pe "that...was frightening" yup #RebelWithoutAPause changed everything in 1987. Music also played: #StevieWonder's "Skeletons" #WhitneyHouston's "So Emotional" #EarthWindAndFire's "System Of Survival" #BarryWhite's "Sho You Right" #MichaelJackson's "Another Part Of Me" & his brother Marlon got the honors for his title track "Baby Tonight" for the dance line. This ep pretty much repped 1987 well (yes #RosiePerez in all her Perezian Is in this ep) #NewJackSwing was around the corner and hip hop's dominance was months away---so this repped RnB's last breath as a genre before it had to make space for the youngins--if anything I'd say that the #JamAndLewis produced #Control was the barometer cats were reaching for at this period (Prince was exploring his colors beyond the color lines of music leaving the funk lane kinda open, in which those two came to the rescue and dominated) @kashifcreative @publicenemyftp @earthwindandfire @michaeljackson @rosieperezbrooklyn @soultrainofficial @@@@ out of @@@@@
