On this day in 1955, Rosa Parks sat down for her rights on a bus in Alabama, invigorating the fight for racial equality. Parks was ordered to give up her seat in the "colored" section of a crowded bus to a white man. When she refused, the bus driver had her arrested. This ignited the first large-scale demonstration against segregation in the U.S., in which African Americans refused to ride city buses in Montgomery for over a year. #RosaParks is now remembered as the mother of the Civil Rights Movement.
