I got back from my second trip to Standing Rock this past Sunday. Right before leaving to the airport to go back home, this group, led by indigenous women, went to the front lines to stand before the militarized and heavily armed police. They prayed, sang songs, told the officers that they are fighting for clean water for *everyone* (even them) and chanted "I love you." Razor wire now reaches down to the river on both sides of the shut down highway. Concrete blockades and large armored vehicles wait on the other side. A few days earlier, we were told not to go this far along the bridge because they would open fire and use some of the same methods that blew open a girl's arm just days before. All in response to peaceful resistance. I am worried for my friends at Standing Rock as December 5th approaches. Supplies are likely to be cut off to the camps due to the governor declaring an emergency evacuation due to weather and supposedly looking out for the "safety" of those at the camps. But we know he does not care about the safety of the people there. On December 5th, the government will attempt to evict people out of the camp. With thousands there, dedicated to protecting their water and the lives of the Natives for generations to come, I believe it is very likely that the police are going to become incredibly violent. Please remember this as you watch these peaceful women saying "I love you" to the officers, and know that many of these same women will be in the camp on December 5th.
