Did you know that solar eclipses are a special type of planetary transit? Eclipses are some of the most fascinating celestial events that can be observed without the aid of a telescope. They occur relatively frequently – ten solar eclipses will occur before the end of the current decade. What you don’t hear about as often are transits, which occur when a celestial body passes in front of another without eclipsing it as seen from Earth. Here, we talk about the only planets that can pass in front of the Sun from Earth’s point of view - Mercury and Venus. Eclipses and transits are a type of syzygy (siz-i-jee); which is a straight-line alignment of three or more celestial bodies. (Use syzygy the next time you play Scrabble and you'll score a lot of points.) This image is from the June 6, 2012 Venus transit as seen by the Solar Dynamics Observatory in ultraviolet light.
