80 years ago this week, the first issue of LIFE magazine hit the stands dated Nov. 23, 1936. The issue opened with the following introduction to the first issue of LIFE: "If any Charter Subscriber is surprised by what turned out to be the first story of LIFE, he is not nearly so surprised as the Editors were. Photographer Margaret Bourke-White had been dispatched to the Northwest to photograph the multi-million dollar projects of the Columbia River Basin. What the Editors expected—for use in some later issue—were construction pictures as only Bourke-White can take them. What the Editors got was a human document of American frontier life which, to them at least was a revelation."
