SENIOR SUNDAY! Our friends at @susiesseniordogs would kindly like to challenge your perception of rescue dogs, asking you to see beyond breed and start seeing a dog's heart. "Considering getting a new dog? Consider a mixed breed! Their love is strong and their hearts are pure. They just need you to give them a chance! Martha writes, "I was a purebred snob my whole life. I was addicted to purebred Basset Hounds. I was the secretary of the Basset Hound Club in Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN for years. I looked down on Bassets that were not 'breed standard.' I was buying my Bassets from supposedly good breeders and paying thousands for purebred Bassets over the years. Unfortunately they all died of different cancers at very young ages. My last Basset named Leonard died of horrible bone cancer at the age of 3. I had finally had enough.
I went on Petfinder and started looking. Who knew there were so many basset mixes out there that are 'good with kids, good with other dogs and good with cats!' My first rescue was Barbara Jean – she is a yellow basset lab mix (Blab!). She looks like a yellow lab with little short legs. She was found in a dumpster. She is so beautiful to me. And she LOVES kids so much! When we walk the neighbor kids flock to Barb and she leans into them for any attention they will give her. Then I adopted Barry White. He is Basset/Blue Heeler. Barry was found in the middle of winter as a stray in the frozen countryside in Minnesota. Barry and Barb loved each other immediately. My heart is wide open to any dog now – my rescue dogs taught me so much – they literally opened my eyes to a whole new world and I am forever grateful to them!""
