One of the things I've learned from playing overseas is how important it is to have the ability to laugh at oneself. We tend to take ourselves and our feelings so seriously. Humans are naturally selfish creatures -- we think things "happen to us", when they don't, they just happen. We personalize situations, and out of it, we create our own suffering. . To put it bluntly, you are just one tiny insignificant human out of billions of others set foot on this planet earth. But we glorify our own presence; we imagine ourselves as being so important, so big. . You are no more important than anyone else. You are born, you live, and you die. We are all the same, regardless of what we accomplish in our lifetimes. It's crucial to understand this. I'm not trying to be nihilistic, I'm trying to emphasize the flaws in our innately egoistic perspectives. . We must work on developing the ability to remove ourselves from personal situations, and look at them from the outside. Take a step back from your life. Gain perspective. . And then, find the humor in it all. . For example, let's take a look at one of my own faults. I hate losing and tend to wallow in self-deprecation after a tough loss, even if I played very well. If you are sad because you lost a volleyball match, take a step back and look at the situation. Realize that being upset because you don't think your performance was up to par is entirely self-centered. You tried your best, and regardless, your performance does not define you. It's just a game. There is always tomorrow to learn, improve, and move forward. So why are you crying like a little baby again? . It's all so comical when you think about it. Our feelings are funny. People are funny. Life is funny. Learn to laugh about it. . Once you can do this, your world becomes an infinitely happier place. Trivial things remain trivial (which is nearly everything we get worked up about). And you realize that our time on earth is short, so we might as well take it all in with clear eyes, light hearts, and big smiles on our faces. Not to mention, you will find yourself constantly entertained. The world is a funny place.
