Question from Camilo Moreno Gómez: What was the most important thing you learned about composition and orchestration studying with Nadia Boulanger? #AskQ

Answer: She always said, “Your music can never be more or less as you are as a human being. It's the humanity in you that makes what you create.” I also learned that the more definition you put on the music, the more freedom you have; it sounds counterintuitive, but YOU decide when it's sparse, dense, loud, or soft. Think about it...many of Beethoven’s compositions used retrograde inversion (where the melody is backwards and upside down) and the organic thematic development is why we're still playing it 500 years later. The ear gets used to the melody in 15 seconds so you got to turn it upside down...that's the power of definition and why certain songs stick with us for so long.
