Having lived in eight countries while growing up because of her dad's job, 26-year-old @mitskileaks knows what it's like to not belong. The vocalist guitarist and bassist uses her music to reflect on being an outsider and how cross cultural identity (her father is American and her mother is Japanese) can feel alienating. "It's incredibly touching when girls who are of mixed backgrounds or who feel out of place say, 'Your song meant a lot to me,'" Mitski notes. "That's when the gravity of what I do sinks in."
A year after graduating from Purchase College, State University of Music, Mitski released her breakout album, Bury Me at Makeout Creek, which garnered critical acclaim. Though her latest record, Puberty 2 details her search for happiness, Mitski knows she can always find solace in music, "It's like a family but also a lover but also a good friend. It's home to me." ? Check out our December Issue playlist on @Apple Music to listen to Mitski and many other amazing artists. ??: @ericchakeen Styling: @kirbymarzec
