We can't talk about veterans and say nothing about homelessness. An estimated 40,000 veterans go homeless on any given night in the U.S., according to a report the National Alliance to End Homelessness released last year. That number doesn’t include the 1.4 million vets who are considered at risk of homelessness, according to the study. Here are three ways you can support our homeless veterans today. 1. Get Involved Get involved with community-based programs that help relieve the problems of homeless veterans. Sadly government money is often limited, so community groups help fill in the need with volunteers to provide support and resources for returning vets. You can play a part in ending homelessness for vets by becoming aware of programs in your area and doing what you can to help. 2. Hold Government Officials Accountable Contact your local officials, from your congressman to the mayor’s office, to find providers that offer help for homeless vets. Ask what’s being done in your community about helping the homeless. 3. Hire a Vet! If you’re a business owner, you can focus on hiring vets, if possible. People can encourage their employers or businesses in the area to provide sustainable employment for vets to avoid homelessness in your community. Workforce training and guidance for job seekers is another needed service. Next time you pass a homeless man or woman in your city, consider that they may be one of the thousands who fought for our country and are now homeless. #Veterans #Homelessness #VeteransDay
