To every veteran: thank you for your sacrifice and service to protect innocence and freedom. Thank you for carrying the weight of a burden that many of us will never know. Thank you for believing in the goodness of humanity even when your service to us has not been honored. Thank you for my son's laughter. Thank you for giving my mother and uncles your time, food and bubble gum in South Korea after they all endured living through the horror of the Korean war. And a special thank you to my dad, my first hero, a Colonel who served for almost three decades in the US Army, a veteran of war and who denied the Purple Heart medal on behalf of those who didn't make it and for those who did but did not get to keep all of their limbs in their survival. You have modeled courage, love, sacrifice, honor, character, passion and perseverance. You have instilled a value for freedom and goodness and life. I wish that every one of you would be honored in a way that would touch the deepest recesses of your heart and life in some way each and every day.
