Für ihre Verdienste um die jüdische Gemeinschaft erhielt Kanzlerin Merkel die Ohel-Jakob-Medaille in Gold – die höchste Auszeichnung der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde München und Oberbayern. „Wir sind es den Opfern der Schoah wie auch uns selbst heute schuldig, das Wissen um das Geschehene von Generation zu Generation weiterzugeben und uns entschieden gegen die heutigen Bedrohungen durch Hass und Antisemitismus zu wenden.“
For her dedicated support of the Jewish community, Chancellor Merkel received the Ohel Jakob medal in gold – the highest distinction of the Jewish religious community of Munich and Upper Bavaria. In her acceptance speech Merkel said that we owed it to the victims of the Shoah as well as to ourselves to pass on the knowledge of the past to the next generations, and to turn decisively against today's threats of hatred and anti-Semitism.
