In a time where we as people will continue to work to shatter that glass ceiling of equality I wanted to share this photo of my grandmother in the 1940's. She worked in the field of chemistry in a time where it was unheard of for women to have professional careers in science. In the coming days, months, weeks and years it will be natural for many of us to feel the overwhelming sense of fear, disappointment and panic for what is a perceived lack of empathy, compassion and understanding around us. A strong urge and sense that we don't know each other the way we thought we did as a nation. I cannot speak to the incredible difficulty that so many women, minority communities, LGBT and so many subjugated groups of people have faced and continue to face day in and day out but I can say that I support you, I love you and I will continue to hope for and dream of the day that our nation is healed. Regardless of your political or social beliefs always remember that we as a people can only advance with love and understanding and that the hate that so many cling to as a viable means of governing will only stand to decay our culture, our passion and our love. 70 years ago Anna Flanders was told women couldn't do what a man can do and today it can sometimes feel like we take steps backward from time to time but we HAVE to be diligent as a culture to remember the responsibility we have to our youth to show them that we are all equals and we are all stronger together. The night is always darkest before the dawn and while we are currently a nation that feels divided I refuse to give in to the pessimism and fear. I am an American and I believe in ALL of us.
