Climate change is causing glaciers in northwest Yunnan to recede at historically record rates. On Kawagebo, Yunnan's highest peak (over 6700 meters), Ming Yong glacier has receded 530 meters in the last 10 years. The grey color on the glaciers surface is thought to be the ash and soot from yak dung fires which absorb heat from the sun, further accelerating the melting. The Tibetan Plateau is often called the "Third Pole" because the mountains in this region are extremely high, allowing glaciers to exist in a temperate region of the world. So when they recede quickly you know it's got to be due to #climatechange #tibetanplateau #meilisnowmountain #yunnan #china @thephotosociety @ナショナルジオグラフィック @natgeocreative #supchinanews
