La confrontation avec la police s’est produite quelques heures après que les autorités du Dakota du Nord ont critiqué la compagnie pipelinière pour n’avoir pas immédiatement signalé la découverte d’objets archéologiques indiens et un jour après que le président Barack Obama a évoqué la possibilité de modifier le tracé du pipeline.
