A few days ago, the TV show I’ve been working on for the last 7 years, #PrettyLittleLiars, came to an end. 7 years, 12-20 hours a day, 7 days a week, 10 months a year. It isn’t all glamour. A 12 hour day is a minimum day by union contract. Now for me, it was never that tough. I was only a recurring character for those 7 years, working only a few days per episode and less than half the episodes per year. But for the 5 main characters and the 150 crew members who showed up every single day, it was their life: the camera crew, lighting techs, props, catering, hair and makeup, wardrobe, teamsters, editors, writers, producers, post production team. All day, every day, they were together, seeing each other through heartache and huge success, marriages, divorces, deaths and births. We were a family. Stepping into the makeup trailer on that last day, tears and gifts were flowing freely. It wasn’t the first time I’d been here. I’ve been a member of a long running TV series a few times in my career. And I’ve had to say goodbye every time. But for this cast, it was their first. And suddenly I saw how vulnerable these young cast members really were. Beyond the red carpets, the Teen Choice Awards and all the international social media, they are just twenty-somethings having to say goodbye to their families. Consider this, Sasha Pieterse began the show at age 14. She’s now 21. She grew up on this set… a tough day indeed. I stood there taking it all in, my heart hurting for them. All of them ready to move on yet not wanting to let go. So reflective of life, really. And although they could not identify or articulate it, I knew that what they were struggling with was what to do with all that love they had shared. Where does it all go?
