Once you get over the view from your terrace, come down to explore San Blas, an artisans’ district since the Inca period. If it's early, get in line behind locals and expats at the San Pedro Market for a steaming bowl of caldo de gallina for breakfast. Eclectic galleries dotting the neighborhood’s stone alleyways prove that artists are still hard at work here. Tourists on their way to Machu Picchu also abound, but the general feeling is laid-back and harmonious, especially when a corn beer called chicha is involved. A red bag hanging on a doorway means you’ll find it inside. And where there’s chicha, there’s often also sapo, a deceptively simple game that involves tossing a coin into a metal frog’s mouth. It’s best to watch a couple of games before joining in; the loser always buys the next round.
