HT: Villa 0-0 Fulham - Villa were on top for most of the first half against Fulham but were unable to break down a stubborn Cottagers defence. A low-key opening 20-minute period was punctuated by three half-chances for Villa. James Chester sent a glancing header wide following Jordan Ayew’s cross from the left, Jonathan Kodjia’s fierce angled drive was beaten away for a corner by keeper David Button, and Leandro Bacuna’s downward header from close range wasn’t far off target. In the 27th minute Ayew almost opened the scoring with a shot which almost caught Button off guard. Accepting a short pass from Rudy Gestede, Ayew initially hesitated but then burst forward to unleash a low, skidding 25-yard drive which the keeper gathered at the second attempt.
