When I was just 18, I was invited to a dinner party in the Hollywood hills. The scene was a mix of wealthy gay retirees and beautiful young boys looking for someone to buy them headshots. I was out of place that night and mildly depressed over the outcome of my own headshots when I sat down next to a fabulous woman draped in cashmere. She was rattled bc her husband had recently passed and this was her first time driving at night since she'd lost him. We talked for hours about her career in show biz, her childhood in Davenport Iowa and her keen understanding of Los Angeles real estate. I told her about my career ambitions and eccentric parents. At the end of the night, we exchanged phone numbers and agreed to have dinner at Kate Mantallini the following week. That dinner turned into dozens more until eventually she was one of my closest friends. She hosted my college graduation party at a house she had on Carmelita. After college and a brief stint in Europe, I moved in to that house with her. She helped me potty train Mr. Teets. When my car broke down, she let me borrow her jag. She taught me the importance of a St. John suit and the merit in eating the occasional piece of steak. She took me under her wing and exposed me to a world I had up until then only dreamed about. She was not only a role model, she was a fairy godmother. We sadly lost touch over the years but I will never forget her generosity, her class, her wisdom, or her charm.
