Waking up to countless articles and headlines about Donald Trump and his predatory language is “shaking me to my core”, to quote the First Lady. I am sick to my stomach and utterly heartbroken when I think of all of the survivors of sexual assault out there waking up every morning to the despicable words and actions of the Republican nominee for President that are unescapable thanks to social media and news coverage. Therefore, to keep up with the First Lady and Hillary Clinton’s philosophy of “when they go low we go high”, I’d like to highlight the HEROES and crusaders in the field of sexual assault who are giving everything they have, every single day, to help survivors. I know I have many social media followers who are survivors themselves. I invite you to share your stories with me of the heroes in your life who helped you through the trauma you endured. In your darkest time, who helped raise you up. A hero that I have a personal connection too, is Gail Abarbanel. Gail Abarbanel was the Santa Monica hospital’s only social worker when a patient changed her outlook on rape treatment and prevention. The patient had been walking on the beach when a stranger attacked and raped her multiple times. Six days later, she was admitted to the emergency room after attempting to commit suicide.“This was in the 1970s,” said Abarbanel, “She couldn’t find anywhere to go for help. We didn’t know about trauma or (post-traumatic stress disorder). Nobody talked about rape.” This experience led Abarbanel to found what would become the Rape Treatment Center at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center in 1974. When someone very close to me was raped on her college campus, I googled where to bring her to get her help immediately after her assault. The Rape Treatment Center was the first thing that came up on google and we could not have been more grateful. We still, to this day, call the the staff there our "angels". We could not have been MORE loved, welcomed, taken care of and supported in what was most certainly the most terrifying morning. Gail Abarbanel who is the founder of the Rape Treatment Center is my personal hero. A true woman warrior.
