To be honest with you, throughout my life I’ve dealt with a lot of rejection, a lot of no’s, and the biggest ones came when I was in foster care. Leading up to my emancipation, I was extremely scared of becoming homeless. Knowing I didn’t want that to happen, the only plan I could think of was getting into a university that had dormitories so that I'll have a roof over my head. A home was my first priority, but I also knew how important it was for my future to get an education. I had a moment where my fear was overtaken by determination, and I said a huge ‘yes’ to making that plan a reality. I studied day and night to improve my GPA and worked three jobs in high school in hopes to qualify for college admissions. I applied to basically all of the California universities. And slowly, the rejection letters came. All no's. But then, one faithful morning on April Fool's Day of that year, a big package from a university came in. It was from that moment that I knew my determination to build a life for myself and get an education would allow be to push through any future doubt.
On my 18th birthday, I emancipated from the foster care system and went straight to college. To this day, I view every no as a "no[t yet]”. I believe that in the darkness of times, yes's are just hard working no's.
