Today marks a considerable achievement for filmmaker, Nate Parker. His debut feature film as a director, “Birth of a Nation” opens in theaters. It’s a story of the slave rebellion led by Nat Turner in Virginia in 1831 and highlights the evils of 19th century slavery. In 1993, Tupac read the book - “The Confessions of Nat Turner”. He was so inspired by this hero of resistance that he dreamt of bringing this story to life. Like so many times before - you find multiple meaning in Tupac’s messaging - his tattoos are no different. Exodus is the 2nd book in the old testament- teaching the story of the parting of The Red Sea and Moses leading Israelites to freedom. Exodus is also the title of Bob Marley’s album and single where he sings about the same thing: “From across the Red Sea! Movement of Jah people!” The ‘1831’ date right below 'Exodus' marks the year of Nat Turner’s revolt to free slaves. Not unlike Bob Marley and Nat Turner, Tupac was willing to sacrifice himself for the betterment and freedom of oppressed people. He felt connected to them - inspired by them. In 1996, just months before his death, Tupac was in the beginning stages of developing the Nat Turner story into a movie. He intended to write, direct, and star in this film. “Birth of a Nation” is a movie written, directed and starring Nate Parker. This movie tells a vital story and shares the same vision that Tupac had over 20 years ago.
