Last night the Metropolitan Fashion Week awarded me Fashion Commentator of the Year, and all I can remember is thinking how wierd it was to accept an award for a career that saved ME when I felt most doubtful, useless, and unsure. Back then I was hella scared about my future. I was average at school, and knowing how to apply makeup or put great outfits together did NOT compute as a plan. When I put my award away today, I stumbled across a bible I got when I moved to LA. Here I would write my thoughts and open fears because I felt like He was listening. This was the first letter I wrote to begin pursuing a career and just trusting it couldn't be just about me . My words "help me to grow purposeful in Love, like your Spirit, hit me like a ton of bricks. I've heard of "be careful what you pray for", but never stopped to recognize He's made that happen 13 years later. Back when I wrote that, it became my foundation to do all things. I look at my planner back then and remember my hustle. I'd drive from San Jose to LA for auditions, sleep in my car, on ppl's couches, dealt with fake ones and appreciated every person I met because I just knew His plan would be so much doper than what I could imagine. And today, I am the happiest I've ever felt showing people how to constantly discover themselves through personal style. I know, my award isn't a Nobel prize or anything but it was a reminder to get outside of our own head when it comes to our personal goals. There's SUCH a greater vision beyond what we can see, but when we move in a Spirit and Purpose of Love, we end up right where we are supposed to be. Even if it doesn't make sense now (and it did NOT always for me), be consistent in character and integrity and He'll show u if u let Him. Congrats to all nominees & winners and thanks for the reminder #metropolitanfashionweek ?
