These are the words that #JoseFernandez spoke just last year when he became a U.S. citizen. He added, “This country is the best country in the world and it’s made out of immigrants.” The 24-year-old passed away this weekend in a tragic boating accident. Fernández came to this country from #Cuba after trying to defect several times. His story immediately made him the star child of #Miami, a city that couldn’t help but see a reflection of themselves in his life; out of the nearly 3 million people in Miami-Dade County, about a third consist of #Cuban refugees and their children, people who came to this country fleeing persecution and finding refuge on nearby shores. We loved him because he was a phenomenal baseball player, sure, but it is equally about the distinctly immigrant version of American patriotism that the All Star embodied.
