In 1983, Melcher departed for the Detroit Motor Show with a hand-drawn motor design draft in his luggage. His proposed idea: An 8-cylinder engine with a 4-valve cylinder head. Melcher sold the first car, an AMG 500 SEC, equipped with this engine prior to even creating it. The AMG 500 SEC quickly became a top seller.
