I used six colors mixed together in one bowl to actually SIMPLIFY my formulation AND application of my red-auburn. Usually when mixing for reds it is suggested to use 20 sometimes even 30 volume developer with a permanent hair color. I will take this approach when dealing with levels 5 and under (medium brown to back). Most of the time when someone sits in my chair wanting their same level of lightness but want to change the tone of their hair to red I almost always reach for a Demi-permanent hair color, like Wella's Color Touch. Usually in color lines they will give you a few options of developers for a Demi permanent color. One is weaker just to stain and deposit color into the hair, while the other is slightly stronger and allows for a slight diffusion of their natural pigment. The benefits of using a Demi in this situation where I'm changing her hair from her 4 inches of natural and previously faded color on her ends to this red are...
1. I don't have to use a different formula to accommodate the heat of the scalp (no hot roots)
2. When the color fades it will blend in with her natural in about 6-8 weeks. (No MASIVE line of demarcation or out growth)
3. It's a more gentle process for the hair. (Healthier hair)
4. You can go crazy mixing super fun colors and it will still come out soft. (A more natural look)
