I've been navigating the harsh lines of yoga industry vs yoga community for years now. It's incredibly challenging. My purpose is in community, it's the beginning and end of everything I do. But fact of the matter is this: money is in industry. We are busy building community with our studio in Aruba coming along and @oneoeight.tv expanding and @109world making a global difference but none of it would be possible without money - i.e. industry. I like to believe there is authenticity in my take on this challenging, unbelievably conceited yoga industry but about once a month I want to give it all up and just go back to teaching yoga out of our backyard. How do you operate in an industry that purposely takes advantage of community? How do you take a practice anchored in non-attachment and surrendering of ego and use it for "success" without losing sight of purpose and tradition? I've been labeled as a "yoga celeb" for what feels like a long time now... And I still have no clue. Maybe there is only one or the other. Or maybe there is a way to bridge the gap. I don't know. I'm in love with the community yoga has helped me create but I detest the money hungry industry that so desperately wants to profit off it. I'm also acutely aware of the fact that no matter how much time I dedicate to using my influence for good, I'm also a part of the problem. I teach big classes. I write books. I tour the world. I run a yoga platform. I'm building a studio. I'm playing with the idea of a clothing line. I use social media to market my ideas. I was one of the first people to do "yoga and Instagram", a phenomena that I equally love and can't stand. I created #yogaeverydamnday which has grown to become the biggest online yoga movement in the world. I'm not only a part of this industry - I'm shaping it. I like to think I'm doing things differently, that I'm able to stay authentic, that I'm making a difference with my influence, that the yoga community that I cherish so deeply isn't suffering from the industry that comes along with my side of it.. But I don't know. I'm pregnant and contemplating everything. About to turn my phone off and roll out my mat. See you all tomorrow.
