Meet the doctors and nurses of the pediatric ward at Rafic Hariri University Hospital in Beirut. 40% of the patients at this Lebanese hospital are now Syrian refugees, and in the pediatric dept it's more than that. Obviously that means a lot of strain and stress for everyone concerned, and I met several refugee parents who can't afford the 10% they have to pay. UNHCR helps them but more is, of course, needed.
This morning I gave a hankie to a crying mother as we looked down at her sick baby who probably won't survive. She couldn't go home to Syria to get the treatment there and had to leave her family in their refugee settlement in South Lebanon to come to this hospital for special treatment for her child's condition. She was living outside the hospital on the street, and will stay until he gets better or dies.
