For the first several months of life, an infant orangutan drinks mom's milk exclusively and continues nursing for up to 6-7 years. Just in case Batang is unwilling or unable to nurse her infant, keepers have trained her accept the use of a breast pump. If bottle feeding were necessary, Batang's milk is preferred to formula so that the infant receives the nutrition and antibodies it needs for growth and a hearty immune system. One of the basic trained behaviors Batang has learned is to present various body parts--including her chest--so keepers can examine for cuts, scrapes, or bumps that may need attention. Building upon this behavior, it was a short step then to ask Batang to present her chest and hold still while the breast pump was in place. The reward for participating is grapes, one of her favorite treats. However, now that Batang is nearing the end of her pregnancy, keepers have put this behavior on hold, as this type of stimulation during this time could induce labor! #OrangutanStory
