This September we're celebrating the first annual New York Textile Month, and every week we'll be sharing a textile work from the Guggenheim's collection.
#GuggUBSMAP artist Adriano Costa credits he radical post-war Brazilian art movement, Neo-concrete, as one of his main sources of inspiration. Costa references these early pioneers in his use of alternative materials, geometric forms, and three dimensional space, while engaging current socio-political concerns. The array of gold-painted household towels in Costa's “Straight from the House of Trophies—Ouro Velho” (2013), along with the work's title (Ouro Velho translates into English as "old gold"), evokes the monetary incentive for colonization, as well as the materialism that has accompanied recent economic growth in Brazil. #nytm
