While visiting the Heian Jingu Shrine and strolling through the gardens, we came across Japan's first electric streetcar (Chin-Chin Streetcar) built in 1890. This streetcar embodies the spirit of the citizens in regard to the preservation and restoration of Kyoto, which is why once it was put out of service it was brought to the shrine and put on display.
The Chin-chin Streetcar influenced the development of modern technology and city planning not only in Kyoto, but also nationwide, and was a forerunner in the environmental and ecological fields.
