I became aware of this sweet old man a few weeks ago when a pal @pawschicago sent me a photo of him. This 14 year old survived #hurricanekatrina but lost his family, and eventually made his way to PAWS Chicago. He was around 6 years old when a new family adopted him, and after 8 years together they had to surrender him. Apparently they are moving somewhere that won't allow pets, so they brought him back to PAWS. While the fear Bastian must have felt upon being dropped off in a shelter breaks my heart, I'm also trying not to judge because I imagine it must have been equally tough for his family...

He's been at PAWS for about 3 weeks. He's a total mush. Loving. Kind. Shockingly spry for his age. But he was showing signs of depression in his new environment. On Friday, as I was mourning my first day without #Patch, I opened the Internet on my phone, and for some reason, Bastian's PAWS page reloaded. It felt like a sign. To honor my sweet boy, I decided to pay it forward for another 14 year old dog, and become a foster mom. While I'm not ready to adopt a new dog permanently, I couldn't leave this sweet man in a place that was foreign and scary at his age.

So. Bastian is living with me in Chicago while we search for his forever home. So far, he loves being taken to brunch. He is very into potatoes and chicken, but beets? Not so much. He is gentle and funny with other dogs, and has a particular crush on @トーレイ・デヴィート's Beau, who looks like his mini-me. He's an absolute doll with babies, and spent a few hours following @brian_tee's baby Mad around, giving her kisses and laying by her side. He is housebroken, quiet as a mouse, and very into naps. We've already given him a barrage of nicknames, including B, Mr. Big, Basta Pasta, and yes, Bastian Schweinsteiger. He kind of looks like he's wearing a German Olympic jersey. And he likes to chase balls.
