From the Libyan coast, it can take this migrant rescue vessel 36 hours to reach a port in Italy. That's a long time to sit on a hard surface in close quarters, but the migrants are so exhausted that no amount of discomfort can prevent sleep. People arrange themselves horizontally on wooden palettes like a jigsaw puzzle, making use of every square inch on the main deck. The crew hands out soda crackers and raisins, but there are no facilities on board to serve meals to this many people.
When the Italian coast comes into view, it’s an instant boost to all on board. The migrants take turns singing and dancing when they see the mainland.
