Mingus once claimed he'd never record with #RudyVanGelder because he was so powerful as an engineer he wound up changing your sound and tone. But Van Gelder is probably one of the most important engineers not only in jazz for which he is hands down bar none THE standard of engineering (when you hear vinyl and engineer heads talk of the sound quality being "warm"---they are trying to describe Van Gelder's 5th Beatle presence (meaning he was just as important as the musicians playing on the sessions) the list of landmark albums he engineered is ENDLESS: practically all of the #BlueNote #Prestige & #Savoy output of the 50s & 60s from Coltrane to Davis to Rollins to Adderley to Blakey to Donaldson to Monk to McLean to "Lockjaw" to Byrd to Lateef to Silver to Ms Simone to Ms Scott to Ms Ashby to Bro Mcduff to King Curtis to Screamin Hawkin to Amazin Powell to Shakey Jake to the Quartet to the 3 to the Disciples to The Messengers to ......it goes on and on. He was the common denominator that pushed jazz into sophistication from that old timey victrola compressed sound of the 40s. He saw art and made you hear it as so. I'm tempted to say he is one the THE last figures from the 50's Jazz recording eras that managed to miraculously live this long (not even a handful left, more like 1 or 2)--Rudy Van Gelder rest in cool.
