"Because of the glorified and over-hyped image of aggressive, blood thirsty bulls charging Matadors who barely stand a chance against such dangerous beasts, many people think that bulls are mindless killing machines who willingly attack Matadors because it is in their nature.
In reality, most all cattle are gentle and harmless animals who attack when provoked in order to defend themselves.
Before bullfights, bulls are often kept in dark stalls for days, have Vaseline rubbed in their eyes to blur vision, wet newspaper and cotton stuffed into their nostrils and ears, are heavily drugged and/or rubbed with a harsh caustic solution on their legs to throw them off balance. This leaves Bulls disoriented and confused.
Even in bullfights where these egregious cruelties don't occur, the animals are still chased, mocked and tormented in a way that would anger even the most docile of animals. Confused and angry bulls who are only trying to defend themselves are then forced into a slow and painful death in front of a jeering crowd who somehow finds this entertaining.
As you can see in this video, bulls are not out for blood. Almost any domestic animal will respond to the "treat others the way you want to be treated" doctrine if you show them kindness and compassion, they have no reason to harm you. Bulls don't see a bullfight as a "contest" between a warrior and themselves. They are only trying to find a way to escape.
Tradition is no excuse for this heinous crime. Please, never, never attend a bullfight, and get involved in bringing an end to this barbaric practice by signing petitions, donating to anti-bullfighting organizations, and spreading awareness. Together we can destroy traditions of cruelty and build new traditions of compassion and kindness.
