This weekend marked what would’ve been Count Basie’s 112th birthday. Splank basically adopted me when I was 13 & he’d tell me, “Youngblood, step into my office. Let me pull your coat.” Which was slang for, let me give you some knowledge...He’d say, "This business is all about hills & valleys. You find out what you're made out of when you're in the valleys." That stuck with me because of its truth—you’re going to run into some tough times, but it’s in those moments that you discover who you are...If it wasn’t for music & Splank's guidance, who knows where I’d be right now. Happy Belated Birthday to an everlasting soul whose music and legacy lives on.
