In 1929, Alvar Aalto started experimenting with laminated bent wood. His experiments resulted in the L-leg, a solid wood leg with a laminated part bent 90°, which was patented in 1933. Aalto called the L-leg «the column’s little sister», since the connection between horizontal and vertical surfaces is the defining element in both furniture making and architecture, according to Aalto.
