Simone Manuel Becomes First Black Woman To Win Gold In Individual Swimming - blogged by: @eleven8

#TeamUSA is racking up the wins and making history while doing it. 20-year old #SimoneManuel of #Houston, TX has just made history as the first black woman to win a gold medal in an individual swimming event when she took home the gold for the Women’s 100m freestyle.
Manuel, who stands tall at 5’11”, swam the 100m freestyle in 52.7 seconds, sharing the #Olympic record with Canada’s Penny Oleksiak. “This medal is not just for me,” said Simone after her win. “It’s for everyone who came before me and have been inspirational to me. It’s for all the people after me who believe they can’t do it, I want to be inspirational to others that you CAN do it.” Manuel also brought home the Silver in the Women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. She’ll be swimming the Women’s 50m freestyle today. Hopefully that means another #Rio2016 medal to add to the collection.
