Desire, 2, at home in #Malawi’s Balaka district. She has sever acute malnutrition, caused by a drought, and attends a UNICEF-supported therapeutic feeding centre. Alinafe, is a single mother with two daughters and two sons. She lives with her children in a shelter they have made from the husks of the maize plant, after their mud brick house they lived in was destroyed by bad weather. Her only field that had yielded some small harvest last year is now barren, dry and useless. The family’s daily meal is just a handful of dried peas called ‘Nandolo’ which translates as ‘Pigeon Peas’ in English. The continuing drought in Malawi has made their situation desperate. Two-year-old Desire’s diet is supplemented with Plumpy Nut, ready-to-use therapeutic food such as Plumpy Nut supplied to the Balaka district hospital by UNICEF. #ElNino © UNICEF/UN024089/Rich
