I deleted my first post of this photo because I was so taken aback by how it was received. It horrified me to be so misconstrued with why I wanted to share this quote. Maybe I should have added in the paragraph before it where the writer says " All too often, when we see injustices, both great and small, we think, that's terrible, but we do nothing. We say nothing. We let other people fight their own battles. We remain silent because silence is easier. " I saw this while reading Roxane Gays book ' Bad Feminist'. In the book, this quote is written under the chapter called " some jokes are funnier than others " where she talks about a horribly insulting set done by a comedian whom takes pride in making insensitive, atrocious jokes about rape, when during one set a woman stood up and said " Actually, jokes about rape aren't funny." And left. The comedians response, well... It's a response that sadly you would expect yet still makes your jaw hit the floor anyways. She goes on to say, "Humor is subjective, but is it that subjective? " That's when this quote " silence is consent" hit me. Because how many of us have just sat there ? Sat there and then later on wished we had said something ? I know I fall victim to that more than I would like! Something happened just the other day to me personally, where I walked away and thought " ok, so you exited, but next time SAY SOMETHING." With all the tragedies that are happening around the world ... With all the bullying going on just outside our front door.... With everything that's going on politically right now... It's never been a more imperative time to use our voices.
