Jim Houghton, founder of the Signature Theatre Company, passed away today. He gave me my very first professional theater job.

I was 16 years old. I was untrained. I'd never done a play without music, let alone 8 shows a week in New York... but Jim took a chance on me.

And it forever altered the course of my career.

None of you likely heard of me until Dawson's Creek, but I've always considered that first play to be my big break. It set the tone. It gave me confidence, and made me fall in love with the art of storytelling, and the camaraderie that can come with it in the best of circumstances. My lucky TV break 5 years later doesn't happen without the experience Jim Houghton made possible... He created a safe haven for playwrights in NYC to stage whatever work they wanted, however they wanted... and drew to him happy people who loved being there. I got to work with him again ten years later, in a much bigger space, but that contagious, boyish enthusiasm still burned bright beneath the years, wisdom, and respect he'd attained.

Rest in peace, Jim... I am forever grateful for you, and the risks you took. We are all better for your presence.
