Orlando West used to be a symbol of hope in the township that epitomised the struggle against apartheid. Nelson Mandela, an evangelist for the power of education, lived down the road and left money to the school in his will to fund university scholarships for it's best and brightest. But 22 years after Mandela was elected to president on a promise to lead all South Africans to prosperity, Orlando West is failing and so are its students: roughly half drop out before graduation and drug abuse is rife. Troubles at Orlando West reflect how far South Africa's education system has fallen short of its goal: to be an engine of equality to help correct the crimes of apartheid.
