Despite a long and successful club career which brought six league titles with Peñarol, the holding midfielder is best remembered as the inspirational captain of the Uruguay national team which stunned Brazil to win the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Captain of ‘La Celeste’ for 13 years, Uruguay never lost a World Cup match in which Varela appeared.
